Fixed-fee, unlimited time per essay
My Guarantee: no billing surprises |
In addition, most parents underestimate the time it takes to produce an excellent essay. Significant time is spent with the student brainstorming ideas to come up with a meaningful and memorable topic, outlining the essay to create an interesting structure, and pushing the student to introspect and write purposeful prose. It takes a substantial amount of time to read multiple drafts of each essay carefully and with perspective, figure out how each essay could be improved, and communicate these comments and suggestions to the student so the student can make the revisions in the student's own words.

2. HOURLY BILLING PUTS THE PARENTS AT ODDS WITH THE PROCESS
The process always involves several drafts -- the more drafts, the better the essay. So it does not help to put parents in the awkward position of being nervous about amount of time spent or number of drafts reviewed. It is much better for everyone to be willing to put in as much time as it takes to produce the best essays possible.

The fixed fee includes:
My comments can be given in person, via Zoom/Skype/FaceTime, or via email -- whichever works best -- so the student can work on the student's own schedule. Typically, it takes 3-5 drafts to get an essay ready for submission, but the number of drafts could be greater or fewer depending on the student’s abilities and inspiration. Note: If the process turns out to be more efficient than expected so that the fixed is disproportionate to the amount of time spent, I will gladly refund a portion of the fixed fee or apply it to another essay. |
"My daughter’s time with Andrea proved to be worth her weight in gold, when she received confirmation that she was one of the less than 8% to get accepted into UW Madison's Honors Program! The investment in time and money I made was pretty modest for the result I got." "Andrea is more than fair and generous and it’s encouraging to find someone over the internet who offers such valuable services and has integrity too. Her help has been invaluable." "It was a pleasure working with Andrea (real hassle free!!). I also really appreciate keeping the total to less than the estimate (while working on more essays!!) |
"One of the things I admire most about Andrea is that she will keep revising, keep editing, and keep giving you feedback until you are completely satisfied with your work."

CHOOSE WISELY -- CONSIDER EACH APPLICATION AS A WHOLE
Some applications require more than one essay (e.g. schools on the Common App sometimes have an additional one or two "supplemental" essays). It is very important that all of the essays in a single application are of the same quality. It does more harm than good for a student to submit an excellent Common App essay (the end-result of a well-conceived essay that has gone through multiple critiqued drafts) and a substantially inferior supplemental essay that did not receive the same level of attention. Such a disparity in quality will raise red flags! While my pricing is intended to provide maximum flexibility, I strongly encourage clients on a limited budget to .prioritize consistency within each application.

100 Words or Fewer | $150
300 Words or Fewer | $250 500 Words or Fewer | $300 More than 500 Words | $400 Note: When working with a student on multiple supplemental essays, the process usually becomes more efficient with each additional essay as the student becomes more adept at this kind of writing. When this happens, the fixed fees will serve as a “cap” on the total amount billed for the supplemental essays, and the final charge will be discounted to reflect the student's efficiency. |

LETTER OF CONTINUED INTERESTIf you have been deferred or wait-listed at a school, it is a smart idea to write a "Letter of Continued Interest" to let admissions know that you are still very interested in attending their school and to update them on any new achievements, honors, experiences, etc. that enhance your application. Admissions is more likely to select a student who shows eagerness to be admitted rather than a student who is silent.
