Fixed Fee Per Essay -- No Billing Surprises

Fixed-fee billing works better than hourly billing for two reasons:

​1. Hourly Billing is "Surprise" Billing -- and Usually Not a Pleasant Surprise!

​No one knows in advance how much time it will take a student to produce a stand-out essay.  Sometimes the students with the best ideas have the hardest time writing them, and sometimes the students who are convinced they have nothing to say end up writing the most efficiently.

In addition, most parents underestimate the time it takes to produce an excellent essay. Significant time is spent with the student brainstorming ideas to come up with a meaningful and memorable topic, outlining the essay to create an interesting structure, and pushing the student to introspect and write purposeful prose. It takes a substantial amount of time to read multiple drafts of each essay carefully and with perspective, figure out how each essay could be improved, and communicate these comments and suggestions to the student.

2. Hourly Billing Puts the Parents at Odds with the Process  

The process always involves several drafts -- the more drafts, the better the essay. So it does not help to put parents in the awkward position of being nervous about amount of time spent or number of drafts reviewed. It is much better for everyone to be willing to put in as much time as it takes to produce the best essays possible.

From Beginning to End -- Unlimited Time

The fixed fee includes unlimited time for the following:

• Brainstorming ideas and content 
• Discussing and agreeing on the structure of the essay
• Reviewing, commenting and making suggestions on each draft -- as many drafts as necessary 

My comments can be given in person, via Skype/FaceTime, or via email -- whichever works best -- so the student can work on the student's own schedule.    ​​

​Typically, it takes 3-5 drafts to get an essay ready for submission, but the number of drafts could be greater or fewer depending on the student’s abilities and inspiration. If a student is exceptionally efficient so that the fixed fee turns out to be substantially disproportionate to the amount of time spent, I will gladly refund a portion of the fixed fee or apply it to another essay.

​These essays are the most difficult to write because the open-ended questions present a myriad of topic choices and opportunities for creativity. Plus, the purpose of these essays is to provide admissions with insight into the person behind the application, which demands serious introspection in the writing process.

​Note: When working with a student on multiple supplemental essays, the process usually becomes more efficient with each additional essay as the student becomes more adept at this kind of writing. When this happens, the fixed fee will serve as a “cap” on the fee, and the actual charge will be discounted to reflect the student's efficiency.

​This limited option is for students who are confident writers and only need help finding the "write angle" for their essay. It includes brainstorming to select a topic that will produce a unique, compelling and purposeful essay, and guidance in creating a detailed outline for the essay. It does not include any subsequent guidance or editing assistance, but students who want additional help can upgrade to the full service package for the difference in the fixed fee.

          Single Additional Review of Revised Essay |  $75
          Includes one additional round of written comments and suggestions for improvement

          Independent Review Plus |  $300
          Includes one round of written comments and suggestions for improvement, one meeting to

          If the essay requires more work than described above, it will not be considered a "Finished Essay"
          and will not qualify for pricing in this category.

Resume

          Independent Review of Existing Resume  |  $100
          Includes one round of written comments and suggestions for improvement.

          Independent Review Plus |  $175
          Includes initial round of written comments and suggestions, plus review of the newly revised
          resume with additional written comments and suggestions where necessary.
       
          Collaborative Revision of Existing Resume |  $200
          Includes one meeting (in person or via Skype/FaceTime) to discuss, update, and revise together,                  plus one additional review after the meeting with additional written comments and suggestions
